Sleep is so important to the health of a family, that ongoing lack of sleep can affect mood, appetite, immune systems and brain function
Sleep deprivation is a contributing factor of post-partum depression and anxiety
A review of over 100 international studies, conducted in Australia, showed that the intervention of infant sleep solutions can improve maternal mental health
Canberra University researcher and reviewer Kerry Thomas says:
"There were a number of programs that had helped parents reduce night-time waking. These were often provided through residential sleep units and maternal and child health centres, but online programs had also resulted in babies falling asleep sooner and waking less often in the night, with improvements to their mothers' mood reported two weeks later. Many new mothers underestimate the effect of disrupted sleep on their emotional health and would benefit from guidance on the impact of sleep deprivation, strategies for gaining more sleep in the postnatal period and early training in sleep strategies for themselves and their infants"
- Kerry Thomas, researcher at the University of Canberra.
We are Nicky and Amanda; mothers, friends, colleagues and jointly responsible for having dreamt up the idea of a company where parents can access reliable, trusted, proven advice and methods to help their children sleep better, without having to spend a fortune on private consultants, without limiting the support a person can get to the area they live in.
When people ask us what we do, it's kind of hard to explain because when we started Little Ones™, we were very unique - no one else did what we do! Our answer, however, tends to be focused on the values of our company and what we most treasure about the work we do:
"We empower families around the world to make positive change to their little ones' sleep".
Because we know what sleep deprivation is like. We know how it feels to struggle through endless sleepless months, wondering what is going on, questioning and doubting yourself at every turn. We know how long those nights are and how the tears flow easily during the day too.
We've had babies who were bad night sleepers, bad daytime nappers, babies who were rocked to sleep, fed to sleep, bounced to sleep. Babies who slept in the stroller, front pack, hammock, our arms. Babies who were breast and bottle fed, babies who woke at 5 AM every single day. We've had days where we couldn't see through the fog. Where everything was just a bit too hard. A lot too hard, if we're being honest.
With our eldest children, we both totally winged it. We fully just expected that babies would fall asleep when they were tired and that our babies would feed and sleep and life would be easy! Instead of this peaceful watercolour image of parenting, we had babies who stayed awake for hours on end, who would spend extended periods screaming in the early evening, who would be up partying all night.
Google and several health practitioners told us this was "normal", but nothing about our situations felt normal to us. We've since come to loathe that word: "normal". Everything was a battle; motherhood, our relationships with our husbands, our day to day lives. And it was a battle because we had no idea what to do! We had no idea what was coming next - we were on the back foot 100% of the time. What was happening in our families was not "normal", and looking back now, we can see straight away how our lives could have been so different! How our first taste of motherhood could have been so much more enjoyable if we'd had the knowledge, the education about settling and sleep, reliable advice and age-appropriate methods...
And this is why, years later, we started our company and wrote our Sleep Programs - to help people. To help people see through that fog, to give families an alternative to sleep deprivation, to let everyone know that there is another way and with the right advice and a village behind you - anything is possible!
We have since developed Little Ones™ into a global community, where we're able to reach out to parents all over the world. what our wonderful community is saying:
"When my baby hit the 4 month sleep regression, I thought I might lose my mind from severe sleep deprivation. He was catnapping at night and then wanted to cry or sleep all day long! I had no idea how to get him back on track or how much sleep he truly needed for this stage of his development. I saw an ad for Little Ones pop up on Facebook and decided to give it a try. Boy am I glad I did! Their program is so comprehensive and answers all of my questions about how to handle just about anything my baby throws at me! I highly recommend this to anyone suffering through sleepless nights and miserable days with a cranky baby!"
"Being a first time mum I assumed that my baby would sleep when she was tired, nap lots during the day and be able to put herself to sleep. 7.5 months later it was still very apparent as to how wrong my assumption was. My baby girl would only nap for 30 minutes at a time during the day and would wake up every hour at night until I put her in our bed and co slept with her. She was either fed or rocked to sleep and didn’t know how to self sooth. Bedtimes were causing me anxiety because it was taking me in excess of an hour to put her down every night and my relationship with my partner was beginning to suffer because I was exhausted and very moody. After going to my GP for a referral to sleep school & realising that we would be 1000’s of dollars out of pocket as our health insurance wouldn’t cover us, a friend of a friend recommended Little Ones to me. It has been in all honesty the best money I have ever spent and I can’t recommend this program highly enough. After 2-3 days our girl was self settling and sleeping 6.30pm - 7.00am and napping for 2.5 hours during the day. We are all so much happier and relaxed now. Life changer! Thank you x"
"I ummed and ahhhed before committing to this program, but was almost immediately thankful that we did. Our little man is now 12 weeks and sleeps so beautifully both during the day and at night that it feels almost impossible... especially because it was so simple and calm to help him follow the guidelines. The intervals and initial flexibility were just exactly what this little reflux-riddled boy craved, and I needed a tear-free approach. Really, just so very happy and bub is doing so well (it has completely settled his belly getting enough sleep, too). Will be purchasing the next Program as he grows. Very grateful to have found this Program!"
